A subsidiary of the overall electrical sector, the Indian wires and cables industry has rapidly progressed to become a huge revenue generator by itself. Although the industry has become much more organised than before, a large part of it is still dominated by the unorganised sector. The recent emphasis on power and infrastructure by the government has largely boosted the prospects of the industry in recent years. Moreover, the rapid urbanisation of the country is also proving to be a boon for the wires and cables industry, as demand for cables has gone up in manifold ways in various residential as well as commercial construction projects. While the power sector continues to remain one of the largest consumers of wires and cables within the country, other segments such as mining, oil, shipbuilding and elevators are important consumers of cables as well. These industries utilise a wide variety of cables such as elastometer cables and extra high voltage cables. In future, the rapid rollout of broadband and 3G services in India should further enhance the prospects of the wires and cables industry. Hide this
