The demand for electronic goods has grown at a fast pace in recent years, in line with the availability of more disposable income in the hands of the people. Demand has been particularly high for consumer electronic goods, thanks to easier access to finance for the common man. At the same time, the Indian markets are flooded with imported products, which make it obvious that there is an urgent need for the sector to expand its manufacturing capacity. This is also the reason why the country is a major importer of electronic components and finished products. Of late, there has been a rapid increase in demand for mobile phones, laptops and tablets within the country. However, local products in this category need to match up to the international product quality standards, so that more and more people are inclined to buy locally-made items rather than opting for foreign brands. The need of the hour is more government incentives and investor-friendly policies that should go a long way towards ensuring a robust and self-sufficient electronics manufacturing sector in India.
