The term ‘in vitro diagnostics’ refers to medical tests that are conducted for the purpose of detecting diseases and infections occurring within the human body. Such tests can be conducted either in laboratories in a controlled environment or at home by consumers themselves. In vitro diagnostics (IVD) has recently emerged as one of the fastest growing segments within the Indian healthcare industry. Some of the growth drivers responsible for the rapid expansion of the IVD segment include the improved infrastructure at hospitals and installation of automatic and semi-automatic healthcare-based equipment. The recent rise in income levels mean that people are able to spend more on preventive healthcare facilities. At the same time, India has witnessed a rapid increase in lifestyle-related diseases, all of which has spurred growth in the IVD industry. A large portion of the country’s semi-urban and rural areas are not yet aware of the advantages of preventive healthcare and diagnosis, which again presents immense opportunities for the domestic IVD industry. However, due to the low entry barriers, the market for in vitro diagnostics remains highly fragmented and unorganized, leading to absence of standardized procedures in laboratories cropping up everywhere in the country.
