With the rapid expansion of the energy sector in India, environmental conservation has assumed a lot of significance. The environmental damage to the country has occurred in several different forms such as air pollution, water pollution, waste and garbage pollution and damage to natural habitat and wildlife. Apart from having a significant negative impact on the health of India’s population, the environmental issues have also led to depletion of natural resources such as land and water, degradation of cultivable land, and loss of some essential means of livelihood for the poor people. While burning of fossil fuel continues to be one the primary forms of environmental damage, other factors held responsible include burning of fuelwood and biomass, lack of proper drainage systems and sewage facilities, lack of waste removal facilities and operation of certain industrial units in densely populated areas. Problems with the country’s water supply and other sanitation issues are also important points of concern. The Indian government has taken up a number of initiatives to meet up with international standards on issues such as carbon emission, among others. Hide this
