However, despite this, the country has to import a substantial amount of coal every year, which is mainly due to the ever-increasing domestic consumption by the population. Mismanagement of coal mines and poor working conditions continue to be some of the major impediments to the growth of the domestic coal industry. Although Coal India Limited remains one of the country’s leading public sector manufacturers of coal, a number of notable private players are also operating in this scenario. The coal industry requires a substantial amount of investment to develop technologically advanced coal extraction methods, in order to be able to augment production. At the same time, the government regulatory framework needs to be re-structured in order to facilitate the entire production process.
