India has an extensive transport network that is crucial to the development of the economy as it facilitates timely and cost-effective movement of goods and services. The modernisation of the country’s transport network gathered momentum after the process of economic liberalisation. The transport system can be broadly categorised under road, rail, air and maritime transportation. In India, public transportation is one of the most important forms of travel for a majority of the population. The entire transport system faces major challenges in the form of mismanagement resulting in low cost efficiency, lack of investment for capacity expansion purposes, and outdated infrastructure. Road transport is a predominant mode of travel in the country, comprising mainly buses, taxis, two wheelers, railway transit systems and auto rickshaws. The extensive road network is used for individual as well as for commercial purposes, such as transportation of heavy machinery and vehicles. India also has an extensive railway network that connects almost every portion of the country, and provides a cost effective mode of transportation. Apart from railways, the economic growth of India has also made air transport much more accessible than before. The growth of air travel in the country has been marked by the advent of a number of private operators, making it affordable as well as increasing connectivity between regions. Shipping and maritime transport is another segment that has witnessed extensive growth in recent years, and India has a large number of major and non-major ports. Hide this
